Underwood Universal — A Golden Age American Portable

An extraordinary American portable typewriter from the late 1930s, representing one of the last generations of pre-war Underwood portables. Founded in New York in the nineteenth century, Underwood helped revolutionise modern typewriter design and became synonymous with quality, durability, and engineering excellence. For decades, its machines accompanied journalists, authors, professionals, and students across America and around the world.

Design & Build

Finished in elegant matte black enamel with beautiful chrome accents, the Universal perfectly captures the restrained sophistication of late Art Deco industrial design — flowing lines, balanced proportions, and robust all-metal construction that remains every bit as impressive today. The typing action is smooth, precise, and satisfying, delivering the solid mechanical feel that made Underwood one of the defining names in typewriter history.

A Remarkable Discovery Inside the Case

What makes this machine truly exceptional is a piece of history found inside its original carrying case: a German Certificate of Diphtheria Vaccination from the early 1940s. The document belonged to a young girl named Ingeborg Mansberg, born in 1933 and living in Schneidemühl (today the Polish city of Piła). It records two vaccinations administered in November and December 1941, bearing original official stamps and signatures of the period.

The typewriter appears to have belonged to the Mansberg family, with this personal document remaining forgotten inside the case for more than eighty years before being rediscovered. A notable detail in the certificate’s printed text states that the vaccination served not only the recipient’s health but also “the health of the German people” — reflecting how even ordinary public health documents of the era incorporated the political language and ideology of the time. A fascinating glimpse into everyday civilian life during one of Europe’s most turbulent periods.
